To get an SME business loan in Singapore, you check that the company meets the typical requirements, prepare the documents banks ask for, choose which participating banks to approach, submit a properly presented application, and then accept the offer and complete documentation before the funds are disbursed. Each step can be done by the business itself, or with a financing consultancy managing it.

Step 1: Check the basics

Before anything else, confirm the company fits the typical minimum requirements. These are a starting point, not an approval:

  • A Singapore-based business with legitimate commercial activity
  • At least 6 months of active revenue visible in the company’s bank statements
  • At least 30% local shareholding, with that local shareholder or director able to come on board as Personal Guarantor
  • Personal Guarantors generally able to provide their latest 2 years of personal Notice of Assessment

There is no fixed minimum number of years incorporated. If your company is very young, read how new your business can be first.

Step 2: Prepare the documents

Most of the delay in a loan application comes from documents arriving late or incomplete. The usual pack is:

  1. Last 6 months of company bank statements, for all active operating accounts
  2. Latest 2 years of personal Notice of Assessment, for all directors coming on board as Personal Guarantor
  3. A clear photo of NRIC front and back, for all directors
  4. Latest 2 years of company financials (P&L and balance sheet), not required for a sole proprietorship
  5. Credit bureau report for directors coming on board as Personal Guarantor (an older copy is fine; not mandatory, but good to have)
  6. Company business profile (ACRA)

The qualifiers in brackets are the part people most often get wrong. More detail is in documents needed for an SME loan application.

Step 3: Decide which banks to approach

Different banks have different qualifying criteria, credit appetites and restricted industries. A business that does not fit one bank may suit another, so the choice of bank matters as much as the application itself.

That does not mean applying everywhere at once. Each application should be positioned for the bank receiving it. We explain the trade-off in should you apply to several banks at once and which bank is best for an SME loan.

Step 4: Submit and respond to the bank

Once submitted, the bank carries out its own credit assessment and may come back with questions or requests for further documents. Responding quickly and consistently keeps the case moving.

As an indicative guide only, never a guaranteed turnaround: a straightforward case (healthy revenue, strong margins, good account balances, nothing needing mitigation) can take around 1 week or more, subject to the lender’s processing. A complex case can take about 3 weeks to 2 months. See how long business financing takes.

Step 5: Accept the offer and draw down

If the bank approves the application, it issues its offer with the approved amount, tenure and rate. Read it in full, including the Personal Guarantee, early repayment terms and any fees. After approval and signed documentation, disbursement typically follows in about 1 week, again as an indicative guide.

What if the bank says no?

A rejection from one bank is not always the end of the road. It is worth understanding why it happened before applying anywhere else. Read rejected by the bank: what next.

Can someone handle this for you?

Yes. A financing consultancy can assess the business, identify suitable financing options, structure the case, coordinate with lenders and manage the process to completion, so the business owner does not have to manage every bank conversation, document request and follow-up themselves. The bank still makes the credit decision.
